Over the years, RCD has had many requests for ropes courses designed for people with a disability or for a facility that must also be accessible for people with disabilities. Frequently, this is to help secure funding that would not otherwise be available and in our experience often gives little consideration to some of the real issues.
RCD is not expert in dealing with those requiring disabled facilities, however, we firmly believe that everybody is different in terms of their requirements. It is very much our preference that those who may be challenged in their mobility are still encouraged to partake on a standard high or low ropes course. Obviously, there are some elements better suited for wheelchair users (e.g. an Equilibrium Challenge) but as a general rule RCD likes to think that their ropes courses are available to all - irrespective of age, gender or ability. A person with limited or no ability to use their legs may find walking on a Balance Beam impossible, but swinging on a Gladiator Traverse easy. Wheelchair users may, for example, still be able to assist in the belaying process or provide the vital link in a low ropes communication exercise.
Organisations dealing with disabled groups know best what would make their ropes course more accessible and RCD is always happy to oblige to this end.
